Hey, I'm Clinton, and welcome to my first beauty blog for Le Salon Dieppe | LSD Beauty. Why did I take this long to write for my own company? Well, let's just say social anxiety is real, I've had a few fear moments, but I'm ready to divulge pages of valuable information to help you look and feel fabulous - feel the way you want to. You see, we don't always tell clients upfront what they need in terms of beauty services. We believe you have the right to be comfortable in your skin and hair, and we're here to provide the services that make you feel amazing. Instead, I ask, "What are you concerned with?" when a client has a concern or questions about how to achieve their desired results, especially with at-home hair care, that's when I truly shine. What makes me qualified to speak on topics as complicated as hair care and beauty?

I'm not a hairstylist, but I've been in this business for over 11 years. Through my previous beauty franchise and current salon|spa, I've had hands-on experience with hundreds of beauty brands and over 10,000 products. I've been heavily involved in team member education. I've helped thousands of clients customize hair care routines based on personal needs, sometimes through trial and error, and I've delved deep into the science and education of everything hair.

Folks, let's talk about split ends, damaged hair, and frizz – the banes of our existence! The little medusa snakes at the end of our strands quietly hissing to us "self-care for hair mattersss *snake sound*." We love flaunting our gorgeous locks when they cooperate, and split ends, frizz, and damaged hair aren't the looks we're going for.

The Science Behind Split Ends and Damaged Hair

Before we dive into solutions, let's talk about what causes split ends and damaged hair. Split ends occur when the protective outer layer of your hair (the cuticle) becomes damaged and frayed, exposing the inner core. This damage can be caused by heat styling, chemical treatments, aggressive brushing, or just everyday wear and tear. Frizz, on the other hand, is often caused by a lack of moisture in the hair, which can also lead to breakage. Once the cuticle is damaged, your hair becomes weak, making it prone to splitting, breaking, and frizzing. When left unchecked, these issues can lead to further damage to your precious locks.

How Regular Trims Help Maintain Healthy Hair... Magic?

Hair Stylist removing Split Ends and Damage

If you want to have longer, healthier hair, schedule regular trims. Your hairstylist isn't lying to you to keep you in their chair; it's science! Counterintuitive, yes, but still science. So, do regular trims help your hair grow longer? Not exactly. It helps prevent breakage. By regularly snipping away those pesky split ends, you're preventing further damage and keeping your hair looking fabulous (there are products to help stretch out your need to go as often, and just a few are listed below). So, how often should you book that salon appointment? Generally, every 6-9 weeks is the sweet spot for maintaining healthy hair, depending on how you treat it in-between, your hair type, and your individual needs. Whether at home or in-salon, hair treatments during your salon visits for cuts further improve your hair's health and appearance.

The Perks of Regular Hair Maintenance

Aside from keeping split ends, damaged hair, and frizz at bay, regular trims also help maintain your hair's shape and style. Plus, there's something to be said for the psychological boost that comes with a fresh haircut - you'll walk out of the salon feeling like a million bucks!

Tips, Tricks, and Products for Banishing Split Ends, Damaged Hair, and Frizz

Preventing it starts with proper hair care. Now that we know the importance of regular trims, let's explore additional ways to prevent split ends and maintain healthy hair. Remember, once your hair splits, there hasn't been a product invented that can actually undo the damage. However, we can prevent further splitting, and if you don't have split ends, we can prevent them from occurring. In between those cuts, we can also help manage frizz and strengthen damaged hair.

Without Further Ado

Here are some tips and our top product picks from myself and/or the team to help you on your journey to split-end freedom:

On Your Own

  1. Be gentle with your hair: Avoid rough brushing, and opt for a wide-tooth comb to detangle wet hair. When using hair ties, choose fabric-covered ones to prevent damage.

  2. Monitor Heat Styling: Always apply a heat protectant first, and remember there's two kinds (there's more that's for another blog). There's heat protection for tools that blow hot air, and heat protection for hotter tools applied directly to hair (Flat Irons, Curling Irons, and Heat Brushes). Know which one you're using! Check the temperature it protects to by reading the bottle. Last, it's tough, but try to stop cranking that Flat Iron to max heat to save time. As a general rule, stay below 400°. Higher than that is meant to be used by stylists for special services, and breaks down the keratin bonds holding your hair molecules together. Slow pass on each segment of hair at the right temperature to get it straight. Multiple passes is 2x,3x the damage. If you need more than one pass, you might need a better heat protector, or better flat iron for your hair type.

  3. Choose the right products: Invest in quality hair care products that nourish and protect your locks. Here are some fantastic options from Le Salon Dieppe to help you mend split ends:

Try These Out

Split End Menders

This miraculous serum seals and prevents split ends while adding shine and softness to your hair.

This lightweight formula instantly mends split ends while protecting your hair from future damage. Purchase this fantastic infusion here.

Oils & Treatments

This nourishing oil is a game-changer! Infused with organic Muru Muru butter, it repairs, protects, and prevents split ends.

The most beautiful part about the Rich Repair treatment by Goldwell is in the name - 60 seconds! This is one scientific brand all around, and 60 seconds in the shower between your shampoo and conditioner is all the time you need (squeeze excess water out after shampooing before applying). The other perks - the smell, the creaminess, the large amounts of healing keratin (remember, can't heal a split end though, only prevent), and the price!

This leave-on conditioner nourishes and detangles your hair, preventing split ends and breakage. Any salon professional leave-on will do. Apply after showers for most hair types after patting dry with a towel, or apply to dry hair in the mornings. Get your fast food fix for your hair here.

Heat Protection

This Canadian go-to heat protectant for creating beautiful styles with your hot tools is hot. This versatile spray not only safeguards your hair from heat damage but also provides long-lasting results with the smallest amount of hold. The argan oil influsion adds shine and the coconut infusion adds smoothness, ensuring your hairstyles stay flawless throughout the day.

While these products can work wonders in keeping your hair healthy, nothing beats a professional trim (with an added treatment when needed) to truly banish split ends. So go ahead, book that appointment with your hairstylist and say goodbye to split ends. With regular trims and some tender loving care, you can maintain healthy, breakage-free hair that's the envy of your whole squad, or you'll be the one leading them toward true hair harmony.
